Summary or Abstract
:
Three introductory clinical psychology textbooks, used in undergraduate and graduate courses, are hermeneutically analyzed for heterosexist content. Explicit inclusion of lesbians, gay men, and bisexual women and men in the texts is discussed. Assumptions about sexuality and sexual minority members are explored and issues and topics excluded from the textbooks are considered. The effects of the explicit, implicit, and excluded material on the reader/clinician are considered. The discussion suggests that, in addition to reflecting the broader cultural anti-gay bias, textbooks perpetuate the heterosexism of earlier textbook editions and primary source material. Suggestions to reduce heterosexism in psychology textbooks are presented..
