Summary or Abstract : This exploratory study examines levels of optimism and coping style as predictors of quality of life in individuals with chronic mental illness. Data were collected from 94 participants in state-licensed Community Support Programs. A significant relationship was discovered between optimism and coping; such that the higher the level of optimism the more active the coping strategies employed. Significant relationships were also found among optimism, coping, and quality of life, such that the higher the level of optimism, and the more active style, the greater the quality of life. A third variable that contributed to a greater quality of life was age. Implications for future research and clinical practice are discussed..
