Summary or Abstract : Graduate students in schools of professional psychology are faced with the challenge of entering a field that has been widely shaped by managed care practices. The job market for the new clinician significantly differs from those of previous decades. This dissertation reviews the relevant body of literature that addresses managed care issues including changes in psychotherapy and psychological testing, effects on incomes, job opportunities, emerging work settings, and ethical dilemmas. Trends that inform the future of the practice of professional psychology suggest psychologists will move from direct-service delivery to positions in administration, program development and implementation, consultation, supervision of other providers, public health, and preventative medicine. Additionally, managed care will likely continue to endorse brief therapy as the primary modality of psychotherapy and require the use of outcome measures. A history of managed behavioral health care is given, beginning with the early health care arrangements made in the early 1900s between physicians and industry bosses. The dissertation addresses knowledge that the literature suggests is essential for new clinicians to know. Recommendations for adjusting graduate education including predoctoral internships in order to better prepare graduate students are presented..
