Summary or Abstract

This study uses the grounded theory approach to develop an understanding of the outcomes associated with doctoral study in four professional fields: electrical engineering, school administration, clinical psychology, and nursing. Using narratives of students, alums, faculty, administrators and employers (N=162) representing 15 doctoral programs, this study introduces a typology of doctoral student outcomes in four broad categories---cognitive, psychosocial, advanced skill development, professional competencies---and 16 sub-categories. Similarities and differences within and across fields are addressed. This study concludes that doctoral student outcomes are inter-related and largely the same across professional fields. The study also presents several "themes" that cut across outcome categories: cognitive complexity; emotional intelligence; internal locus of control; and socialization to a professional field. Implications for students, faculty, graduate admission officers, employers and program administrators are discussed along with areas for future research..
