Summary or Abstract : Remarkable demographic changes are currently occurring in the United States population, particularly in the rapid growth of the Latino/a community. The Latino/a population in the United States is growing more than three times faster than the population as a whole (Bernstein & Bergman, 2003). The study was exploratory and there were two principle goals: (1) to discover which factors were predictive of programs with more comprehensive Latino-oriented training and education and (2) to investigate current programmatic efforts in preparing students to work with the Latino/a population. A forward stepwise regression analysis revealed that the following four variables were significantly related to the Latino Education and Training Index: (1) the percentage of Latino/a students in the program, (2) the Multicultural Index, (3) the percentage of bilingual faculty members in the program, and (4) the size of the Latino/a population where the program was located. Percentages were calculated for responses to each survey item and analyzed categorically under Multicultural Atmosphere, Recruitment, Research, Bilingualism, Curriculum, and Training. Conclusions were drawn with respect to these findings, with reference to the limitations of this study and the directions for future research. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).
