Summary or Abstract : From a multicultural and ethical perspective, it is necessary that a therapist is competent to address spiritual and religious issues with clients. This composition looks at spirituality, religion, and spiritual wellness within the context of psychotherapy and contends that it is essential to assess a client's spirituality in order to provide the message to the client that the exploration and development of their spiritual life is honored within the therapeutic domain. The field of transpersonal psychology is explored and several of the major Western and Eastern religions that are practiced in the United States are discussed. Differentiating a spiritual crisis from major psychopathology is examined and assisting clients to develop their spiritual or religious life through the use of the therapist's presence and specific techniques is explored. This composition culminates with a course that integrates material about the spiritual and religious dimension within the therapeutic relationship while also incorporating experiential exercises that will encourage students to experientially assimilate the material they are learning..
