Summary or Abstract : Humans invent products, successfully negotiate environments, hypothesize, thrive, flourish and dominate the planet by coming up with wholly novel solutions to problems, primarily through the use of their visual systems. How is this possible? In this project, I give an evolutionary account of the human ability to creatively solve nonroutine problems, noting the importance of the visual system in the entire process. Early hominids evolved a conscious creative problem solving capacity I call scenario visualization in Africa near the end of the Pleistocene epoch, some 40,000-10,000 years ago. Scenario visualization is a conscious visual activity whereby one forms visual images from distinct mental modules, and then through processes of segregation and integration, can transform and project those images in visual scenarios for the purposes of negotiating environments. The evidence for scenario visualization is found in the kinds of complex tools these hominids invented in order to survive in the ever-changing Pleistocene world. This capacity can be correlated with neurobiological processes of segregation and integration, viz., processes that enable humans to select data from environmental stimuli, and to organize this data in ways useful for the organism. Further, the processes of segregation and integration can be found in the activities of organisms in general. Because the brain is an evolved organ, a complete explanation of these processes must appeal to general biological and evolutionary principles. The evolution of these processes in our early hominid past, I argue, help explain the modern-day human ability to utilize visual information so as to respond creatively, at a conscious level, to changes in environments..
