Summary or Abstract : This study investigated personality development and parenting styles using Individual Psychology as a theoretical base. Specifically, this study examined the extent Baumrind's (1996) parenting styles relate to particular personality lifestyle variables of adolescents and their parents. Furthermore, she examined the extent to which psychological birth order affects adolescents' perceptions of parenting styles. The sample included 80 adolescents and their parents from a high school in the southeastern United States. Lifestyle was measured using the BASIS-A Inventory (Wheeler, Kern, & Curlette, 1993), psychological birth order was assessed using the White-Campbell Psychological Birth Order Inventory (Campbell, White, & Stewart, 1991), and parenting style was assessed using the Parental Authority Questionnaire (Buri, 1991). The implications of this research extend to multiple areas. Understanding specifically how lifestyle and psychological birth order relate to parenting is beneficial information for clinicians and parent educators. Furthermore, previous research has not directly associated Baumrind's parenting typology to Adlerian theory. Finally, this study provides cross-generational information about lifestyle and parenting style..
