Summary or Abstract : In this study, I suggested that the emergent field of positive psychology, as a new science of human strengths and virtues, expand its scope of the good life to be mindful of what constitutes the meaning of the good life in different cultures. The focus of the study was Snyder's (2000) hope theory which was tested in an individualistic (U.S.) and collectivistic (Mexico) culture. A more interdependent-collectivistic or group-centered conception of the hope construct was also considered and tested. Through a series of cross-cultural tests, I investigated hypotheses about cultural differences and predictive relationships involving self-construals, two kinds of hope (individualistic and interdependent-collectivist), and subjective well-being..
