Summary or Abstract : This dissertation examines the crime stories of German author Willibald Alexis that were published in his serial collection, Der neue Pitaval , between 1842 and 1850. Although Alexis was best known for his historical novels, the case reports of historical crimes in Der neue Pitaval constituted arguably the most widely read crime literature of its time in Germany. Representing more than simple diversions, these stories were politically, socially, and historically engaged, and they provoked a lively critical response with the appearance of each new volume..
