Summary or Abstract

The current investigation began the development and empirical evaluation of the Masculinity Attitudes, Stress, and Conformity Questionnaire (MASC)--a new instrument that was designed to assess various aspects of masculine ideology and gender role conflict, including attitudes about what men should be like, how their behavior corresponds to their attitudes, and the level of distress resulting from male role expectations. Exploration into the reliability and validity of the MASC was investigated in a sample of 333 male adults living in California. Participants were recruited from colleges and universities in six different counties..
