Summary or Abstract

This research study examined the effects of ChoiceMaker's Self-Directed IEP curriculum on the self-determination of students in grades 6-12 with emotional/behavioral disorders (EBD) or other health disabilities (OHD). The sample population of 16 was broken down into EBD and OHD groups. The study utilized a one-group pretest-posttest design for each disability area. The Arc's Self-Determination Scale was used to measure student total self-determination and four subdomain areas: autonomy, self-regulation, psychological empowerment, and self-realization. The t test for paired means was used to calculate significant difference in each category. The study found no significant difference in the mean scores of either disability group for total self-determination or any of the four subdomain areas. The study identified psychological empowerment as a strength and self-regulation as a weakness of students with both disabilities. This study is written for administrators, regular education teachers, special education teachers and persons interested in self-determination and the continuation of research..
