Summary or Abstract : The purpose of this study was to investigate elementary school teachers' perceptions concerning local environmental education and how those perceptions impact classroom curricula and science teaching methodology. Data gathering techniques employed in this study were a survey questionnaire and focus group interviews. The participants included 26 elementary teachers from a rural school in Maryland for the survey questionnaire and 12 science teachers from the larger participating group from the school who volunteered for focus group interviews. Data were gathered in the form of demographic and background characteristics as well as general attitudes about local environmental education from the 26 survey participants and grade level and individual focus group responses from the 12 science teacher participants which were classified into environmental themes. Findings included but were not limited to the importance of local environmental education and the degree of curriculum integration in grade kindergarten through third grade. Shared personal environmental experiences and the need to teach environmental education were emphasized more in grades kindergarten through third more than fourth and fifth grade. Other findings included student attentiveness and improved behavior while using the outside environment for instruction. Recommendations were made from the data analyses to plan future environmental projects as the rural elementary school moves toward Green School status, and included ways to infuse local environmental education through the district's existing science curriculum including professional development..
