Summary or Abstract : Purpose, scope, and method of study . Character education has been a priority in both public and private schools in the United States for centuries. While research has studied the effectiveness of character education in the public school, research is lacking on character education in the private, religious school setting. Although the majority of the experts in the field of character education advocate using the school's concurrent curricula (e.g., official, operational, extra, and hidden) to teach character, there is little research on how a school's concurrent curricula teaches character. This study describes how the curriculum at a private, religious school teaches character to its students. This single case study analyzes a Jewish day school's curriculum by examining school documents and records, observing classroom instruction and school culture, and interviewing school administrators and teachers..
