Summary or Abstract : This survey research study documents a summer pilot research course (ED 197A: A Dialogue in Race, Ethnicity, Religion, Gender, and Diversity Issues for Educators) in multicultural education. ED197A utilized concepts and strategies by Professor James A. Banks, Director of the Center for the Study of Multicultural Education, and his contributions to the design, research and theory of curriculum reform pedagogy for educators. This study sought answers to the following questions: (1) What are the implications of Banks' models for multicultural education in the design of a multicultural course for teachers in a College of Education? (2) To what extent does Banks' approach to multicultural education provide a concrete guideline for teacher training? (3) What are the relative strengths and weaknesses of Banks' teacher training recommendations compared to those of other prominent multicultural education theorists? (4) Can a multicultural education course using Banks' concepts be designed and delivered during a summer session in which students transition through Banks' stages of understanding? A summer pilot course was developed during the summer of 2001 at Penn State (ED 197A) to field test the concepts and strategies in developing a multicultural education diversity course..
