Summary or Abstract

The dissertation provides a comprehensive discussion of the relationship between markets and curriculum. Over the past two decades, market-based reforms and standards movements have been increasingly influential on both curriculum and educational practice. In the face of a national curriculum and a national test as essential steps toward the marketization of public schooling, the purpose of this dissertation is to discuss the development of market-based reform and curriculum commodification as its consequence. To accomplish this purpose, I developed research questions that sought to understand why market ideas fail to insure a sound curriculum and what kind of curriculum ideas should be proposed to defend public interests..
