Summary or Abstract : This qualitative study was conducted to explore the efficacy of telehealth counseling facilitated by the principles of cognitive behavioral therapy, in the treatment of alcohol abuse. Despite the rapid increase in the use of computerbased approaches to psychotherapy, there is insufficient empirical research. This study presented the enhancements to learning and knowledge resulting from multisensory educational computer applications used in the cognitive science information process paradigm. This paradigm was then utilized as the premise. Four case studies of diverse ethnicities, between the ages of 21 and 31, were selected with the baseline of an alcohol abuse disorder. These participants were given assessment, reassessment, and interviewing instruments of open-ended questions, clinically field-tested. The participants compared telehealth to one of these four established modalities: face-to-face, telephonic, group, or Web cam treatment. The research finding revealed that maladaptive thought restructuring occurred with positive cognitive changes in all participants after the telehealth application, illustrated by each self-report. Data are reported to present insight, direct responses, and rich descriptions of each elicited affect. Health disparities exist for rural, prison, socioeconomically disadvantaged, multicultural, and other populations including the disabled. Although telehealth has been utilized in other disciplines to meet these needs and computer hubs are being erected to give access to critical areas, psychotherapy applications are wanting. The finding in this present study of maladaptive thought restructuring with a telehealth program will contribute to positive social change by providing support for adept applications and documenting the need for more comprehensive empirical assessment of their effectiveness. Such research may enable programmers and counseling professionals to design credentialed telehealth applications that could provide underserved populations with access to psychotherapy.
