Summary or Abstract : but little research has been done with younger persons. The present investigation was designed to test the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions in improving body image perception and global self-esteem with young adolescent fernales. Drawn from a middle school population in west Georgia, students were excluded from the study if the following factors were present: history of eating disorder(s), significant medical problems, special education placement, abnormal weight, and non-Caucasian race. Twenty-three participants (mean age = 12.11) were randomly assigned to one of three groups: cognitive-behavior therapy ( N = 8), cognitive therapy ( N = 8), and study skills (control) ( N = 7). Four pretest measures addressing the three components of body image disturbance and the related affective domain were administered: Eating Disorders Inventory-2 Body Dissatisfaction subscale (cognitive component), Body Image Avoidance Questionnaire (behavioral component), visual size estimates (perceptual component), and Self-Perception Profile for Children (affective component). Treatment was provided for seven sessions. Both therapy groups focused on topics such as physical appearance and body image, role of beliefs in body image, cognitive errors, stress inoculation, behavioral aspects of body image, and relapse prevention. The study skills group received instruction in study skills and assistance with classroom assignments..
