Summary or Abstract : Purpose . My study was undertaken to provide information concerning African American client perceptions of multicultural counseling competence and perceptions of counselor effectiveness. The purpose of my study was to examine perceptions of multicultural counseling competence of White therapists working with African American clients. Also, my study examined the relationship between multicultural counseling competence and counselor effectiveness of White therapists. The question became whether or not client perceptions of multicultural counseling competence influenced overall perceptions of counselor effectiveness. The results from my study provided more insight into the degree to which White therapists demonstrate cultural competence as perceived by African American clients and whether the perceptions of multicultural counseling competence predict perceptions of effective treatment. Additionally, the research study examined demographic aspects (e.g. gender, education level, income status) and counseling aspects (e.g. reasons for therapy, numbers of sessions, reasons to terminate therapy) of African American clients and their influence on perceptions of cultural competence and perceptions of counselor effectiveness..
