Summary or Abstract : This dissertation studied the core curricula requirements of all Texas public institutions of higher education that had been in continuous operation since the 1949-1950 academic year and had curricular documentation available in their libraries or academic offices. Academic catalogues from 17 institutions meeting the time criteria were reviewed for core curriculum or general education requirements in three academic years: 1949-1950, 1974-1975, and 1999-2000. Data were tabulated using criteria designed by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and the Texas Legislature in developing the Texas 42-Hour Common Core Curriculum (Texas Administrative Code, Title 19, Part 1, Chapter 5, Subchapter S, Rule 5.402)..
