Summary or Abstract : Curriculum change processes in accounting departments of selected academic institutions were studied using grounded theory methodology. Data were gathered from grant reports, and interviews of faculty and university administrators. A Theory of Balancing was developed to explain a three-stage basic social process of change in academic institutions. Previous literature had not addressed how individuals resolve problems while implementing change and has relied heavily on survey research that could not address the dynamics of change in organizations. This research explains how individuals solve problems in bringing about organizational change, provides a methodological example of a process study in innovation diffusion, and provides intervention strategies for controlled change..
