Summary or Abstract : The aim of this naturalistic inquiry was to understand how mental health counselors made meaning of their professional encounters with client trauma. Seven women licensed mental health counselors participated in in-depth interviews and responded to questions about (1) how they characterize trauma in practice, (2) how they make sense of their clients' traumatic experiences, and (3) how they have changed professionally through their work with trauma. Data were analyzed using constant comparative methods: unitizing, categorizing, and documenting emergent themes. Three major themes emerged. First, counselors define trauma by considering the context in which it occurred as well as the current context of coping and healing. Participants identified clients as being instrumental in their learning about trauma. Second, participants make meaning of client trauma by generating professional responses and engaging their own coping skills. Third, they interpret events through their beliefs and lived experiences. They noted shifts within themselves as they reflected on their experience especially growth toward deeper cognitive understanding, greater emotional balance, and improved relationship skills with clients. Study participants focused on clients' traumatic experiences of interpersonal violence, particularly, abuse and domestic violence. Findings highlight the importance of tacit knowledge in understanding clinical work and point to an integration of personal and professional experience of the counselor within the counselor-client relationship.
