The American Diabetes Association (2004) position statement, "Preconception Care of Women with Diabetes" provides the standards of care stating that all women with childbearing ability should have counseling about the risk of malformations associated with unplanned pregnancies and poor metabolic control. The purpose of this study was to study the Registered Nurse-Diabetes Educators (RN-DE) role, practice, and training of preconception counseling (PC) when dealing with females with diabetes, with a special focus on adolescents. The problem for this study is the lack of information about RN-DE in regard to: (a) their awareness and understanding of PC for their female clients with diabetes; (b) their role in actually providing PC; (c) what components (according to standards) of PC they provide; and (d) if and how they are trained in PC..
