Summary or Abstract : Despite the critical importance of understanding the function that coping skills, high-risk relapse situations, self-efficacy, and attributions play in the substance abuse relapse process, there is considerable evidence that many substance abuse counseling students and substance-dependent relapse patients do not realize the role these variables play in relapse prevention and the readiness for change. This study had two primary purposes: (1) to examine the changes in beliefs samplings of these two groups experienced as a result of completing coursework and treatment, and (2) to determine whether these variables predicted the likelihood of relapse or the readiness for change..
