Summary or Abstract
:
Data collected in this study were analyzed to determine the influence that age, ethnicity, gender, and counseling exerted over illicit drug use. Data were collected from patient files from the time of admission through month 12, not all patients completed 12 months of treatment. Cross sectional monthly analysis and pooling data controlling for counseling produced mixed results, including evidence that a positive UDT increased as the level of counseling increased. Responding to these findings and considering the inability of records based reviews to establish causation the inferences drawn from this study will provide recommendations for future research. In particular the role that individual counseling contributes to program retention and reduction of illicit drug use of methadone maintenance patients.
