Summary or Abstract : Multifactorial inheritance has recently become more popular as a genetic explanation for conditions which are caused by both genes and environment as more such disorders are discovered. These conditions present a challenge to the genetics professional in terms of recurrence risk, concordance, response to treatment and diagnosis. One such category of diseases is mental illness. Two of the most common mental illnesses, bipolar disorder and unipolar major depression, are the focus of this review. Knowing how to counsel a patient for one of these conditions will become increasingly important as more people are diagnosed with these diseases and they are more commonly addressed in society. An additional reason for studying mental illnesses is the very real need for awareness of when a psychiatric referral is necessary. Genetic counselors are often thought of as one member of a patient's health care team and therefore have a responsibility to provide the most comprehensive care possible, including appropriate referrals to specialists.
