This study examines the history and current status of peer counseling programs in colleges and universities across the United States. It includes a survey, modification of a previous survey (D'Andrea & Salovey, 1984) which found a lack of systematic organization in peer programs at that time. The new study describes changes in training and roles of peer counselors; new theoretical approaches used in the process, and the relationship to financial and staff resources available for peer work. Suggestions and directions for peer resources, implementing new perspectives for the future, are addres.
