Summary or Abstract : This exploratory-descriptive study examined senior citizens' knowledge of and willingness to participate in a peer counseling program, either as peer counselors or recipients of counseling services. Sixty-seven senior citizens who were participants of the noontime congregate meal program at the senior citizens' centers in the cities of La Mirada, Whittier, and Pico Rivera, CA, completed a 30-question survey. The average age of the respondents was 72.5 years. Major findings indicate that senior citizens are knowledgeable of peer counseling and endorsed having such a program in their community. Over a third would volunteer to be peer counselors, one in four would see a counselor if under stress, and half would consider participating in counseling in the future. Strong relationships existed between concept endorsement and motivation to be a peer counselor, as well as between need for counseling and motivation to be a peer counselor. Implications for social work were discussed..
