Summary or Abstract : It is commonly agreed upon that the body image provides the foundation for later development of the representation of the self. However, until now no specific investigation has been undertaken to elucidate the emergence and earliest ontogenesis of the body image, specifically. The here presented approach asks first of the neurophysiological preconditions for certain early psychic functioning, and in a second step, of the emergence of certain behavioral capacities whose emergence is necessary to assume for specific body image functions. Through determining the neocortical and subcortical substrata of specific body image functions, the onset of their functioning is assumed through their neuronal maturation. By taking the onset of their myelination cycle as maturational criterion, it is stated that concept formation capacities emerge slowly between 16 and 23 months. After determining the basic criteria for defining phase transitions, consisting of EEG-changes and specific cognitive steps, a phase-model of early body image development concludes the dissertation. It is argued that proprioception plays the dominant role in providing the essential engrams for the morphosynthesis of the body image. Five ontogenetic phases of body image constitution are outlined: In the Extension-phase body experience is centered around enteroceptive cues and motor directedness is tied to overcome the perinatal neuromuscular flexory tone. In the Cohesion-phase the baby for the first time experiences his body as a unified entity through a minor degree of motor coordination and positive reciprocity within the infant-caregiver interaction. During the Comparation-phase, the skin-body boundary becomes marked more clearly through the systematic apprehension of the parallelity of general body features within the interaction of the infant with his parents. By the onset of mirror-image self-recognition after 17 months, in the Expansion-phase, the existence of a proto-representation of the body can be inferred. During this phase motor effectance is practiced, and body image boundary becomes widened to a reaching-space boundary. Within these established body image boundaries, in the Introspection-phase, the small child becomes capable to verbally refer to inner emotive states as precursor of the onset of cognitive differentiation of the inner space of the body image.
