Summary or Abstract : This study examined the incorporation of Western drama and Taiwanese drama in a new undergraduate theater and drama curriculum at National Taiwan University. The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of the factors involved in blending cultures in a curriculum design. The case study tradition of qualitative inquiry proved to be an effective medium for studying an emergent curriculum. Four research questions were examined: (1) how does the difference between Western and Taiwanese dramatic forms affect the curriculum design process, (2) how will differences between Taiwanese and American educational systems impact the curriculum design and development process, (3) how do cultural differences affect the curriculum design of a discipline/field specifically related to culture, and (4) what cultural differences will need to be addressed with regard to understanding culture through literature interpretation..
