Summary or Abstract

On September 22, 1862 President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation officially ending slavery in the United States (Todd & Curti, 1961). The Proclamation brought an end to slavery without making provisions for the transition from slavery to freedom. This spawned an ongoing debate on the purpose of education for the freed people. The purpose of this research is to examine the educational programs at Tuskegee during the Booker T. Washington Era under the lens of the contemporary microscope of Boone and Brookfield's community-based adult education theories..
