Summary or Abstract : This paper explores the situations in postsecondary education that may cause barriers to earning a degree. The nature of students, both traditional and nontraditional, and how their circumstances can be impacted is discussed. Retention theories from the past are reviewed and then compared to the newest ideas on retention in postsecondary education. The most recent research on postsecondary retention combines academic support with social support for the most successful way to increase student persistence.
