Summary or Abstract : Prior research on the topic of achieving a higher degree of education intended to rectify some of the weaknesses of the status socialization theory by adopting a framework that could be used to explicitly model a student's anticipation and estimation of objective probabilities of success, unlike this study that examined and explained why so many external factors impact students' expectation. This study explored how various social barriers such as student background characteristics (measured by socio-economic status), family structure, school quality, ability, parental education, work, earnings, and expectations of others significantly contributed to the level of educational expectations held by African American students and thereby contributed to the disproportionately low numbers of African Americans attending college. This research was an exploratory study based on secondary analysis of NELS 88, with total N = 12,144..
