Summary or Abstract : This study explored the nature of personal learning theories constructed by early elementary students diagnosed with mild learning disabilities or attention deficit disorder. It is grounded in linguistic and cognitive aspects of J. Piaget's (1963, 1970) and L. Vygotsky's (1962) theories of cognitive development, as well as Theories of Mind by J. Astington, P. Harris and D. Olson (1988). The composition of students' personal learning theories, their methods of communicating them, the influence of student choice on the development and communication of personal learning theories, and implications for educational planning were studied from students' perspectives in four ethnographic studies..
