Summary or Abstract : The purpose of this study was to assess how teachers differ in their literacy instructional practices of clarifying word meaning, encouraging text meaning and improving word knowledge. Furthermore, the relationship among teachers' instructional practices, their balanced literacy training and the level of advance status for their students on the New York State Grade Four English Language Arts exam (ELA) was investigated.
