Scope and method of study . The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceptions of African American male pre-service teachers. This qualitative research study applied the methods of interviews, document analysis, participant observations, and shadowing as forms of collecting data. The analysis of data was an ongoing process that utilized the constant comparative research method in which themes were created by writing memos during field observations, creating displays from coded data sources, and by labeling collected data into categories..
