Summary or Abstract : This dissertation argues that philosophy and educational philosophy is a necessary tool for correctly evaluating one's seminal educational theory. Education in the modern world is frequently lacking a unified academic and educational vision, because education is pulled in many directions by competing allegiances which are driven by a variety of diverse philosophical commitments. As a result the pursuit of knowledge, and its dissemination, is no longer understood as a coherent and unified quest. Institutions of higher education will frequently adopt mission statements that are often antithetical to the pragmatic philosophical commitments of an institution. An inquiry into the philosophical foundations of educational theory will enable you to identify how an institution s internally held beliefs which are at times incommensurate with their stated mission..
