Summary or Abstract : This dissertation investigates how selected novels of the early republic both reflect and participate in the ongoing debates over the proper role and nature of education in the new democracy and the place of the intellectual in American society. As literary history, this study offers a corrective to recent criticism of the early novel (which has located its significance primarily in relation to contemporaneous political controversies) by demonstrating that educational discourse constituted a crucial part of the genre's cultural milieu, a context which has received insufficient notice in current histories of the form and period. As cultural history, the dissertation argues that the early novel plays a significant role in the development of education in America, influencing popular attitudes toward schools, teachers, and teaming and contributing to the deep ambivalence toward and suspicion of education which took root in American thought during this period..
