Summary or Abstract

In this dissertation, I argue that while education is inevitably political (and thus society has a strong and legitimate interest in directing the goals and procedures of education), education must also be sensitive to the preferences and desires of the individual to be educated, with regard to his or her own education. The starting point for any educational theory must be some view of the ideal citizen in the ideal state, which influences what kind of person is the ideal person, and thus what kind of education we use to produce that ideal person. On my view, this ideal person to be aimed at by education should have (among other traits) some kind of freedom as autonomy. Because autonomy includes making your own choices about what kind of life to lead, the goal setting in education by society, which I argue is absolutely necessary, inevitably conflicts with goal setting by the autonomous individual. The problems generated by this conflict of individual and group goals in educating for autonomy are the main questions I address in this dissertation..
