Summary or Abstract : The quest for schools of excellence has been a stalwart pursuit in the United States for over six decades. Despite these efforts, American education continues to lag behind our international peers. The method used to identify schools of excellence in this study is the National Blue Ribbon Schools program. This quantitative study compares Blue Ribbon schools to comparable schools using the indicators outlined in Jim Collins (2001) book, Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap . . . and Others Don't. Using a survey entitled the GReatness Evaluation and Assessment Tool, school principals and teachers were assessed on these indicators. Results established that none of the schools exhibited all of the good to great traits. Statistically significant findings were demonstrated in leaders, the hiring practices, a strong Hedgehog Concept, and in the technology accelerator characteristic..
