Summary or Abstract : The purpose of this study was to explore the influence of witnessing on the resolution of grief and the occurrence of depression following the loss of a loved one through death or miscarriage. Witnessing occurs when someone becomes aware of the emotional needs of one in grief and makes a conscious decision to attempt to meet those needs as identified by the one who is grieving. The witness is committed to the one who is grieving for as long as there is a need for witness bearing. The witness testifies to the world that the loss is worthy of grief and that the one grieving has a right to grieve. The study also further refined the Witnessing of Disenfranchised Grief scale. Two hundred and one individuals participated in the study. Each was self-identified as having suffered the loss of a loved one through death or a miscarriage during the previous five years. Each participant was over 21 years of age and not taking prescription antidepressants at the time of the study. Participants completed the Texas Revised Instrument of Grief, the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, and the Witnessing of Disenfranchised Grief scale. Witnessing was not determined to have a significant impact upon the level of depression following the loss nor was witnessing found to decrease the level of grief that was experienced. The Witnessing of Disenfranchised Grief scale was determined to be a one-dimensional scale and reliable..
