Summary or Abstract : Reading and writing are used in everyday situations, daily routines, and in all aspects of learning. Children need literacy skills to help them gain the knowledge to learn to read and write. The use of a balanced literacy program for the teaching of reading and writing to young children is very important. Educators can use a variety of teaching methods and activities to teach reading and writing to their students. This study is a quantitative exploratory research study using descriptive statistics. This study was conducted within a large urban school district with 312 participants. The participants were educators from special education, pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, first and second grade regular education. The researcher determined which literacy teaching methods were used in these classrooms, the frequency of use of these methods, and to what extent that special educators and regular educators use the literacy teaching methods in their classroom. The participants were asked to complete a survey on balanced literacy. The results showed that educators use a variety of teaching methods and that they use them on a weekly basis or more often. The reliability of the test instrument used for this study was a .967..
