Research indicates that a childhood history of abuse is associated with adult depressive disorders and that depressed adult mothers are at risk for maternal-child interaction problems. These findings suggest that these same negative outcomes in adolescent mothers, depression and parenting problems, might be associated with the young women's abuse histories. The purpose of this dissertation study was to examine the impact of a history of childhood maltreatment on depression, suicide attempts, and maternal role attainment in 95 adolescent mothers who participated in the UCLA Early Intervention Program for Adolescent Mothers (RO1NR02325-01A2, PI: Dr. Deborah Koniak-Griffin). Quantitative and qualitative strategies were used in this longitudinal, descriptive, and correlational study. Prior work has demonstrated the difficulty of using quantitative measurement techniques for evaluating the subjective component of maternal role attainment in adolescents. In this study, ethnographic interviews with 15 adolescent mothers allowed for the opportunity to view the experience of motherhood through the eyes of the adolescent mothers..
