Summary or Abstract : The purpose of this study was to determine whether children diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and taking the medication Ritalin for this disorder had more feelings and ideas indicative of childhood depression than children not diagnosed as having ADHD and not taking Ritalin. The sample consisted of 40 subjects from 6-11 years of age. Twenty were diagnosed with ADHD and taking Ritalin, and 20 were not diagnosed with ADHD and were not taking Ritalin. The subjects with ADHD were identified from the daily medication records at the elementary schools in a school district. Children without ADHD of the same age/gender as the experimental group were selected from a class list. Symptoms of depression were measured by a questionnaire, the Children's Depression Inventory. The findings did not support the hypothesis that children with ADHD and taking Ritalin had a higher incidence of depression than those without ADHD.
