Summary or Abstract
|

This study examined depressive symptomatology among nonrelated caretakers of elderly people. Residential care home workers (RCFEs), nurse's aides (NAs), and home care workers (HCWs) were studied. Caretakers' symptoms measured by the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) scores were compared to general population norms established by Nietzel et al. (1987), No significant differences emerged. The three groups were compared. The prediction that RCFEs would have the highest BDI scores was confirmed. A post hoc analysis revealed gender and working hours accounted for 11 of the variance. Differences were reexamined. After extracting variance attributable to these variables no differences in the BDI scores were found. Further research in this area is needed..
