Summary or Abstract : The benefits of process-oriented education in higher education are often underlined. However this does not always go along with carrying out empirical research into conceptions of students and teachers about learning and teaching and their approaches to learning and teaching. In this dissertation we examined by means of a mixed method research design student teachers' and teachers' conceptions of learning, teaching and learning-to-teach and related learning and teaching strategies. Based upon former research within the research field of learning and instruction, a conceptual model of learning and teaching was constructed. Empirical research which was carried within three institutes of higher education made clear that in higher education and especially in teacher education, student teachers have particular learning styles which are related to personal and contextual factors. Individual differences in learning of student teachers are also associated with preferences for process-oriented (constructivist) learning environments. Teachers' conceptions of learning were found to be related with the realization of more process-oriented education. Also personal and contextual factors are related with teachers' conceptions and approaches to learning and teaching. The research results underline the importance of enhancing critical reflection about own learning and teaching conceptions and related approaches/styles for student teachers and teachers in perspective of process-oriented education..
