Summary or Abstract

African-American students have yet to attain levels of achievement comparable to those of European-American students. Cultural differences between teachers and students have been suggested as one factor contributing to the continuing educational disparities between the two racial groups. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of multicultural education teaching competencies on the mathematics and reading achievement of African-American 6 th grade and 8 th grade middle school students in an urban Northeastern city. A total of one hundred twenty-three teachers from twelve schools (Kindergarten through 8 th grade and Pre-Kindergarten through 8 th grade) completed the Multicultural Education Cultural Competency Assessment (MECCA). An exploratory factor analysis was performed on the MECCA resulting in a single factor solution..
