Summary or Abstract : Current educational programs are struggling to fill or keep special education positions. This study examined current educational research and teachers in the field on why they left or stayed in their special education teaching position. The participants were teachers around the area who are currently assigned in special education or have been special education teachers in the past. All participants completed surveys and engaged in discussions on their teaching assignments. The surveys and dialogues allowed for a story to be told regarding special education programs and key characteristics that need to be a part of the program in order for special education teachers to stay in their positions. This study examines factors that may enhance their environments to allow them to stay in the special education field..
