Summary or Abstract : Adolescents of the current generation represent an unpredictable variety of cultures and needs, a welcoming yet unstable reality (Sizer, 1999). The range of their academic abilities and motivations stretch to extremes. Compounded on this are the social, familial, physical, psychological, and personal challenges adolescents, particularly females, must overcome. In the midst of all the above, middle school teachers must educate these children, guiding them through reading, writing, speaking, and listening to improve their skills and aptitudes while enabling them to express themselves during adolescence. However in middle school, academic progress stagnates. Criterion-referenced test scores administered in the fall and spring of the 1998-1999 school year in the Alameda Unified School District revealed minimal progress or declines in girls' language arts performances. However, student scores of seven select teachers increased as much as 35 points..
