Summary or Abstract : This dissertation is an extended argument for the claim that an adequate theory of education is one which preserves the intrinsic relations between meaning and the learning process. In the three chapters of Part One (Chapters Two through Four) I use the conceptual tools developed within the speech act tradition of philosophical pragmatism to argue the plausibility of the following two-part working hypothesis: (1) meaning has a triadic structure involving a focal target, a largely tacit knowledge base, and an intention to link the target to the base; and (2) learning is the active construction of meaning..
